Stockmann has a long and distinguished history, beginning in 1852 in Helsinki, when Georg Franz Heinrich Stockmann took up a position as bookkeeper and cashier at the Nuutajärvi Glass Factory and in 1859 as store manager.
Stockmann was founded on 1 February 1862. On that date, G.F. Stockmann took full control of the business he had run under his own name from the beginning.

The first Stockmann store was first opened in Estonia in 1993. 1996. in 1993, a Stockmann department store (with a sales area of 12 200 m2) was opened in the centre of Tallinn. It was extended from two to five storeys, making it the largest department store in the Baltics in 2000. At the same time, a 400-space parking garage was built. Today, the Stockmann department store is located in Tallinn's bustling city centre.
